What is the purpose of roof finials?

by guestpost on November 14, 2008

Roof finials originated in the Victorian time period. They are also called roof ornaments, cresting, ball and spike, points, embellishments, garnitures, pinnacle, fennel, finial, and fleur de lis. Their purpose is ornamental and they are usually made from copper or brass. Some roof finials are also made of Terracotta. These finials depict dragons, gargoyles, griffins, witches, and other mythical beings. They are often placed on porches and roof gable ends, their purpose being the protection against evil spirits. Roof finials can be the finishing touches on your home. You can place them anywhere to soften the transition between architecture and the open sky. A finial will also make a fine compliment to a rooftop cupola, if you don’t like weathervanes. Use them creatively to decorate your garage or gazebo. Just as with garden finials, you used to find roof finials only in antique shops. However, as their popularity has increased, they are available in many hardware stores, home decorating stores, and on multiple websites. It doesn’t matter if you want to find finial that will look good on your home, or if your intention is to ward of hostile spirits and witches. The finial that is perfect for your home is out there, waiting for you.
