A weather vane is a simple but amazing device that measures the direction of wind. In the early times winds were said to bring fortunes. They even determined when a farmer sowed his seed or reaped his harvest. Winds have a mythological importance, as early man worshipped wind gods whose favor was sought. At least the Greeks believed so, as is evident by the huge first century bronze weather vane perched atop The Tower of Winds in Athens. With the importance of winds, the importance of devices to measure them were invented. Although the direction of winds can be determined simply by looking at a piece of cloth flying in the wind, weathervanes were prized possessions, as they have a special charm.
